Discuss the pros and cons of the three types of stretching techniques
What will be an ideal response?
Static stretches involve stretching a muscle to the limitation of movement and holding it for an extended period of time. In contrast, ballistic stretching is performed by bouncing through the range of motion and may result in damage to the muscle as it elicits the stretch reflex. Dynamic stretching moves a joint through its full range of motion and is often used by athletes to mimic the actions they perform in their sport. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) combines stretching with alternating contracting and relaxing of muscles to improve flexibility. PNF results in the greatest gains in flexibility.
