Students have been getting feedback on their written work for some time now; many have paid little attention to this feedback, as it was also accompanied by a revision-stopping grade. They should begin paying more attention to similarities in the feedback they get: is structure a perennial problem? Do they typically end stronger than they begin? Which aspects of grammar should they brush up on? Is idea development usually an issue? Making these observations is an important first step in developing their writing skills--they can discover where they should focus their attention for future papers.
