What the teacher does and what students do have powerful influences on the quality of classroom life. For example, how teachers use time affects both the culture of the classroom and student learning. An important use of time is allocated time, the time teachers allocate for instruction in various areas of the curriculum. Perhaps even more important than the amount of allocated time is the quality of use, or how time is actually used. Several researchers have shown that time on task—the amount of time students are actively engaged in learning activities—is directly related to learning. A relatively new concept is academic learning time—the amount of time a student spends working on academic tasks with a high level of success (80% or higher).
