What was the role of women following the birth of Islam?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Women in Arabic civilization occupied a traditionally lower place in society, as in most places in the world. They could not own property outright and had very little in the way of legal rights, also similar to many other areas. Divorce was an option, but more easily obtained for men than women. After the death of Muhammad, however, the concept of harem was more often employed, not for segregation as such, but for providing a sanctuary for women from men outside the family. This is often seen as a constraint upon women, but within Muslim society is seen as protective. After Mohammad' s death, laws pertaining to women did increase in harshness, imposing segregation in mosques, removing the option of divorce, and requiring women to wear a veil. For women, the veil was a symbol of modesty, sobriety and virtue. However, women within their households played an active role in management of their families, businesses, and children.
