A very high-quality video by the people who make the Passy–Muir speaking valve is available. Although this video is more appropriate for the next unit, there is an excellent segment of a man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who is experiencing paradoxical breathing due to the advanced state of the disease. This is a very sobering video segment, but it brings home the very real effects of the disease. I try not to get on my soapbox about cigarette smoking, but it is difficult to ignore the impact of smoking on a person’s life while viewing this video. (Note: I tend to digitize all of my videos to MPEG format, which I place on CD. I then play these using any media player, such as RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, which allows me to fast-forward, reverse, stop, etc., without all of the agony and time-wasting of VHS players. Please note copyright restrictions before digitizing, although I have found the Passy–Muir group to be quite amenable to this process for educational purposes.)
