Explain the following quotation: “the culture industry endlessly cheats its consumers out of what it endlessly promises…”

What will be an ideal response?

None of the offerings of the culture industry actually fulfills its promise. In fact, they are not designed to, and although we know this, we are unable to envision an alternative. And this, above all else, marks the power that the culture industry possesses. The essential lesson is that individuals are not to be treated as autonomous, freethinking persons. Rather, in the pursuit of efficient profit-making, individuals themselves are to be “created” in order to fit into a standardized model that mirrors the standardized products being sold to them.
