The optic chiasm is located a few centimeters behind the eyes, where the optic nerves from the right and left eyes meet. At the optic chiasm, the optic nerves from each eye split. The axons from ganglion cells in the right half of the right retina and the right half of the left retina combine to form the right optic tract. The left optic tract is similarly formed of axons in the left half of the right and left retinas. The right optic tract then runs from the optic chiasm into the right hemisphere of the brain. The left optic tract runs into the brain's left hemisphere.
