Though Hinduism holds virtually every approach to sexuality that humans have yet invented, certain themes can be identified. There are four possible approaches to life-Kama, Artha, Dharma, and Moksha. Kama is notable because it has produced an extensive literature on the achievement of sexual pleasure. Kama sutra by Vatsyayana, a masterpiece of erotic hedonism, testifies to the highly positive view of sexuality to be found in Hinduism. In contrast, the ways of Dharma and Moksha can be rigorously ascetic. By avoiding all passions, including sex, the follower seeks to pass out of the cycle of continual rebirth. This discipline includes brahmacharya, or celibacy, which is to be cultivated at the beginning of life and at the end of life; it is permissible to marry in between and raise a family.
