How did the plantation elite solve their labor problem when slavery was abolished? What did this do for former slaves?

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. The plantation elite solved their labor problem by developing a system of sharecropping. Former slaves would work the land in return for shares of profit once the crop was sold. There were millions of former slaves that needed jobs and they found themselves in competition with poor white day laborers. Up to 80% of former slaves pursued sharecropping. Landowners would supply a place to live, food, and clothing. The tenant and landowner would split the profits, sometimes very unequally. Black sharecroppers found it difficult to keep White landowners honest because they had very few political/civil rights.
