How do researchers study stress and stress outcomes? What is the relationship between stress
and health?
What will be an ideal response?
Researchers assess stress by polling adults on different types of events that might be
viewed as distressing. These events would include major life events, daily hassles, as
well as chronic stress, such as ongoing poverty. Typically, researchers give adults
checklists; it is usually best to simply ask people whether an event happened or not.
Next, researchers estimate the relative mental or physical health of the participant. The
relationship between stress and health is probably indirect, that is, not everyone that
gets stressed over something becomes ill. In general, the presence of daily hassles is
more predictive of general health than major life events.
