Discuss what "cues to action" are and provide examples

Cues to action are "triggers" for the proposed health behavior. Health promotion interventions informed by the HBM often consider this construct in their design. For example, a poster promoting smoking cessation in a bar's bathroom could function as a cue to not smoke despite the many temptations that might be present in this environment. Cues to action function as the prompting event. Interventionists using HBM focus on creating the ideal cues to prompt engagement in the behavior. They can be internal or external cues, the latter of which can take the form of billboards, public broadcasting commercials, and a myriad of other approaches. One group of researchers (Richard, Kosatsky, & Renouf, 2011 ) explored cues to air conditioning use during extreme ambient heat among chronically ill middle-aged and older adults. They examined both internal and external cues. Internal cues included how sensitive the person was to heat, and external cues included whether the person had heard an extreme heat warning or had been informed by a physician or nurse about how his or her chronic health condition influences heat sensitivity.?
