An old home remedy for anemia was to drink from a jug of water into which was added a handful of iron nails. Why might this have been effective at treating certain forms of anemia?

What will be an ideal response?

Iron is an essential nutrient, and the water would have contained iron. If the anemia was the result of an iron deficiency, drinking from the nail water could have added the essential element to the diet.

You have discovered a new microorganism, but you want to know if it is a eukaryote or a prokaryote. To investigate this question you prepare a slide with a simple stain and view it with a light microscope with a 40X objective lens and 10X ocular lens

You also prepare a control slide using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (a unicellular eukaryote). You can see the cells on your control slide, but you don't see cells when you look at your unknown microorganism. What can you conclude from this experiment? A) The experiment failed to visualize the organism because the stain killed it. B) Your new unknown microorganism is probably a virus. C) The cells of the new unknown microorganism may be too small to see with the objective and ocular lenses you used. D) The new unknown microorganism is probably an archaeon.

a) by creating a higher oxygen tension in the tissue b) by concentrating tumor cells at a particular location in the body c) by creating a more O2-deficient environment for the tumor cells d) by driving tumor cells to seek out other sites in the body

What is segregation?

A) Fertilization is random. B) During gamete formation, allele pairs are separated to form haploid gametes. C) Genes lie on chromosomes. D) Chromosomes can swap information during meiosis. E) During gamete formation, segregating pairs of unit factors assort independently of each other.

What most likely explains the recovery of live S strain cells from a mouse injected with heat-killed S strain mixed with live R strain cells?

a. The S strain was revived by the presence of the host's immune system. b. The R strain picked up the S strain DNA, enabling it to produce a capsule. c. The R strain cells picked up the capsules from the S strain cells. d. The S strain fused with the R strain, making it resistant.
