Explain the pendulum effect. How does the "pendulum" help explain a person's perceptions?

What will be an ideal response?

The pendulum effect occurs when conflict escalates to the point at which two parties simply cannot communicate due to their use of polar terms to describe and defend their perceptions of reality. The pendulum relates to a person's perceptions because it includes his or her feelings, attitude, options
and value judgments about the world. When the pendulum hangs in the center, a person's perception
is considered realistic, virtuous, intelligent, sane, honest and honorable. However, when disagreement
occurs, the pendulum begins to swing in either direction representing different opinions and
perceptions of reality.
