Discuss the different types of heuristics biases we face when making decisions, and give an example of each.
What will be an ideal response?
Student examples will vary. A sample answer follows.
Representativeness bias is a bias in reasoning where stereotypes are relied on to make judgments and solve problems. For example, I might decide to go to a Chinese-owned dry cleaner because I believe the Chinese to be conscientious workers.
Availability bias is a bias in reasoning where examples easily brought to mind are relied on to make judgments and solve problems. I might decide not to go to a public concert because of a recent story about a mass shooting at one, even though such an occurrence is rare.
Framing bias is a bias in reasoning where the context in which a problem is presented influences our judgment. For example, I might resent loaning my brother $100, but if I frame it as giving him the money instead of buying him a Christmas present, I will feel differently about it.
