When a rock is mechanically weathered, how does its surface area change? How does this influence chemical weathering?

What will be an ideal response?

When a rock is mechanically weathered, it increases its surface area. This creates a greater contact area upon which chemical weathering can act. Thus, as physical weather progresses, it allows for an increased effect of chemical weathering as well.
