Discuss Vygotsky’s view regarding the dual nature of cognitive development which he termed the general genetic law of cultural development.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Vygotsky believed that higher psychological processes (those involving self-awareness) have a social origin, developing first on the social plane and only later becoming internalized and developing on the psychological plane. According to Vygotsky, “any function in the child’s cultural development appears twice, or on two planes. First, it appears on the social plane, and then on the psychological plane. First, it appears between people as an interpsychological category, and then within the child as intrapsychological category. This is equally true with regard to voluntary attention, logical memory, the formation of concepts, and the development of volition.
