Is a fungal mycelium made up of uninucleate, binucleate, or multinucleate cells? Defend your answer

What will be an ideal response?

Fungal cell hyphae before they fuse with a related strain are uninucleate, and afterwards are binucleate heterokaryons. However, given the fact that there are major cytoplasmic connections between the "individual" cells, you could defend the position that the mycelium was a multinucleate syncytium. This is a good time to tweak those of your students who think biology is loaded with absolutes.
