Explain the relationship between desperation and human trafficking. In your discussion, use at least one specific example outlining how desperation contributes to the likelihood of an individual being trafficked.

What will be an ideal response?

Desperation, particularly caused by absolute poverty, drives individuals to take chances which may lead to enslavement. Those seeking opportunity for work or advancement fall victim to traffickers offering opportunity and often promising job opportunities that do not exist in the victim’s home country. Those living in the world’s poorest areas often live on less than $2 a day and are desperate to survive, entering into bondage or selling their child, is a desperate choice to survive. Girls are particularly vulnerable in areas where gender discrimination is prevalent and their value as sex objects and/or virgins may be commodified by their families.
