What are the benefits and shortcomings of the Rotary International’s Four-Way Test compared to the more complex ethical theories?
What will be an ideal response?
A benefit of the Rotary International’s Four-Way Test is that it is simple and easy to
apply. With only four questions, one can quickly run through the components and
answers before an ethical decision, whereas many of the more complex ethical theories take hard work and reflection to apply. This is a simple way to bring ethical
considerations into an organization or a business dealing. Unfortunately, some of the answers to the questions, depending on the situation, can contradict each other, and one may need a more thorough, systematic way of addressing the situation, which will lead to use of a more complex moral philosophy.
