The tranquility sought by Zen meditation is inherent in the tea ceremony. In rooms specifically designed for the purpose, the guest is to leave the concerns of the daily world behind and enter a timeless world of ease, harmony, and mutual respect. The master of the ceremony assembles the objects and utensils for making tea. The tea bowl is prized for its aesthetic shape and texture. In this quiet room the guest contemplates the tea, its preparation, and the objects accompanying the ensemble, which express the master’s artistic sensibility. The master and guest collaborate in a ritual of meditation to transform the drinking of tea into a work of highly refined art.
