In a brief essay compare and contrast the positivist and systems paradigms. Address the similarities and differences on each paradigm’s stance toward objectivity, data, and the purpose of research

What will be an ideal response?

Positivist and systems paradigms share many of the same assumptions about the nature of reality and the way that we “know.” Students should address these shared assumptions as well as the differences in the explanations forwarded. For example, each essay should illustrate that positivist researchers offer cause-effect explanations, while systems researchers offer explanations as to how something functions. See page 58 for a direct comparison of systems and positivist traditions.
