Explain what can happen to an interference engine when the timing mechanism breaks.

What will be an ideal response?

The least amount of damage likely to occur to an interference engine would be damaged valves requiring replacement. In a worst case scenario, the valves that contact the pistons can also cause piston damage. This would require a major overhaul of the entire engine.
