SMART (Self?Modifying, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a mechanism introduced by disc drive
manufacturers to monitor the state of a hard disk drive. It is intended to warn of a possible failure in the near
future. In a way, it’s a bit like a doctor’s check?up. It may indicate the possibility of a failure in the near future,
but that failure may never occur or it may miss an imminent catastrophic failure. This technology operates by
measuring disk parameters, such as the number of seeks that fail, or bit error rates. It is also possible to
monitor the disk?head height. SMART reports back to the operating system and how the information is used
is system dependent.
