Discuss threat assessment and the factors that should be considered when assessing threats.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer may vary. Threat assessment is critical to determining the threat posed by a subject. Many factors must be considered including age, size, strength, skill level, weapon, and the availability of backup. When dealing with factors like size, age, strength, and skill level, it is generally in relation to the officer. For example, if the subject is much physically larger than the officer, it may change the threat assessment. If the officer is a trained martial artist, it may change the assessment. Finally, degree of stabilization should be considered, that is, the subject’s ability to use force. If they are on the ground, handcuffed, or in another vulnerable position, the threat assessment may be lower than if they are unrestrained, standing, and so on.
