Explain the meaning of the term Jainism.
What will be an ideal response?
Jainism is commonly traced to the Sanskrit word for "conquer." This conquering refers to the battle Jains wage within themselves to gain the full knowledge that leads to enlightenment. The person who has achieved Jain enlightenment is called a Jina, "Conqueror," and all who follow this religion are called Jains, "Followers of the Conquerors." In particular, Jains are followers of the Jina who founded Jainism, Mahavira, but the religion was never named after him.
