Research tells us that one of the most effective processes for finding out whether students remember what they read is asking them to retell. The retellings of narrative and expository text are different. Describe how you would prompt a child for a narrative retelling and for an expository retelling

What will be an ideal response?

Responses might include, but are not limited, to the following:
• Narrative Text:
- "Pretend that I have not heard the story and retell it to me."
- "How does the story begin? or "Once upon a time …"
- "Where did the story take place?"
- "When did the story take place?"
- *any other sensible question or prompt
• Expository Text:
- Assisted recall involves asking questions to elicit responses about text information.
- Allow the student to use pictures or verbal prompts from the text.
- "Tell me more about…"
- Unaided recall involves the student retelling the contents and order of the content in the book without pictures or verbal prompts.
- *any other sensible question or prompt
