The answer is technology and the increasing use of how we do work through electronic means. We can work anywhere in the world at any time and communicate to a group website. We can exchange information in a nanosecond. Computers and all the other technology that allows these virtual connections will only become more advanced, so we will use them more and more. Plus, workers are demanding more flexible work/life arrangements, more autonomy, and more empowerment. If organizations are to keep the best and brightest, they must these demands. Having home-based workers means that organization have to build or lease less office space, which can result in huge cost savings. And, finally, reducing the number of people who drive into the office can reduce the smog in the area.
