Woodrow Wilson has had little elected experience prior to becoming president. He had served as New Jersey's governor for two years when he was elected president in 1912. He had fewer political debts to pay. And his active intervention to remake the world in America's image asserted the view that greater freedom worldwide did follow from increased American investment and trade abroad.
