In France, the government recently passed a ban on persons in public covering their

faces in any way, including veils.

What will be an ideal response?

The government claimed this was partly for public
safety and partly to promote equality of the sexes. Even though it has been over a
decade since the attacks of 9/11, fears of terrorist attacks remain very strong in the
United States, Europe, and elsewhere. Does the protection of the public from terrorism
justify overriding strongly held religious views that women must cover their faces with
veils in public? Are there other religious practices that should be curtailed to protect the
public, and with what justification?
