• Denial of responsibility results when the offender says that circumstances were beyond their control and so they shouldn’t be held to account for what they did.
• Appeal to higher loyalties results when the offender says they are doing something for a friend or a peer group
• Condemnation of condemners results when the offender shifts attention from their actions to the actions of others (such as authority figures).
• Denial of injury and denial of victim result when offender says no one was harmed or that accusations of an injury are over exaggerated.
