Although the total number of human genes (20,000-25,000) is much less than originally predicted (100,000), how many different proteins can be produced?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Human cells produce about 50,000-60,000 proteins. An early notion was that one gene produced one RNA which produced one protein. However, it is now predicted that as many as 60% of the mRNAs in humans are alternatively spliced to produce slightly different forms of the protein with different functions.
