Explain Freidman’s flat world metaphor. What is its significance to teaching and learning?

What will be an ideal response?

In a flat world, Friedman explains, the work done by corporations is no longer conducted vertically—that is, in a structure of workers and supervisors with each person at each level having different, specific tasks. Rather, much of the work has gone horizontal: corporate analysts examine each step in a process and ask whether the firm is a leader in that step; if not, they determine who in the world can best do that work at the appropriate level of quality and the lowest possible cost. The flat world creates significant challenges for teaching and learning. For our students to fully participate in the global community, they require global competence—the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to live and work successfully in our interconnected world.
