Now assume that one has a plain?carbon steel, with an austenitic grain size 7, contaning 0.65 percent C and 0.75 percent Mn.

(a) Give the HRC values for the 100 percent and 50 percent martensitic strucutres.
(b) Determine the D1 of this steel.
(c) At what distance along a Jominy bar of this steel would one expcect to find the HRC corresponding to 50 percent martensite?

Solution:
(a) Since the 100 and 50 percent hardness depend only on the carbon concentration, they will be the same as in Prob. 19.1; HRC 65 and HRC 52.
(b) To obtain the D1 of a steel with 0.65 percent carbon and 0.75 percent manganese, one needs to multiply the hardenability factor for the carbon by that, due to the manganese which by Table 19.5 is 3.50; i.e.
D1= 0.273(3.50} = 0.956 inches
(c) Table 19.3 states that for D1= 0.95 in., 50 percent martensite should lie at a distance of 2/16 in. from the quenched end of a Jominy bar.
