Discuss Rome's attitude toward the Jewish people and their faith and practice.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
- Influenced by earlier Greek discriminatory postures toward the Judaic people, the Romans, with an established state religion of polytheism, continued in conflict with the Judaic people.
- The Roman-appointed king Herod tried to reconcile Jews and Romans through programs of religious tolerance and building; however, after his death Rome became less tolerant of the Jewish faith and instituted direct rule.
- In 66 CE the Jews revolted, but in 70 CE the Romans sacked the Jewish Temple. By 74 CE the Romans prevailed and renamed the region from Judea "land of the Jews" to Palestine "land of the Philistines," erasing the Jewish presence from the region's history.
- In 135 CE, the Roman emperor Hadrian rebuilt Jerusalem as a Roman city and forbade Jews to enter into it.
