How should sources referenced in a paper be reported?

What will be an ideal response?

There are two acceptable ways: notes or source references. Source references are most commonly used in the social sciences. Source references use parenthetical inside citations using the author's last name and the date the source was published. If the author's name is already mentioned in the sentence, just the data should be cited in the parenthetical reference. If there are more than three authors, the term "et al." should be used after the first author's name. If a document is produced by an institution, that institution is considered the author. When several sources are offered to document one claim or statement, each should be referenced with a complete citation separated by a semicolon and presented in chronological order. When quoting directly, the page number must be additionally included. Online references should be cited in the same way; if no date is indicated on the item, the term "no date" should be inserted into the parenthetical reference. After completing all in-text references, all references should be listed in a separate section called references. This must include all sources previously referenced in the report. References should appear in alphabetical order by the first author's last name. Et al., which can be used in-text, should not appear in the references section. All author names should be listed. Each academic discipline has a specific style it prefers (e.g., ASA, APA, MLA). The format will vary, but the content will remain mostly the same, providing everything you need to know to identify a publication and no more. You should consult the journals of your discipline to determine the appropriate mode.
