Based on Erikson’s work, James Marcia identified four identity statuses from in-depth interviews with adolescents. The statuses reflect the degree to which adolescents have made firm commitments to occupational, religious, and political values

Identify each status and give examples of the characteristics of that status.

What will be an ideal response?

The four statuses are foreclosure, identity diffusion, moratorium, and identity achievement. Individuals in a state of foreclosure have never experienced an identity crisis. Rather, they have prematurely established an identity on the basis of their parents’ choice. Individuals experiencing identity diffusion have found neither an occupational direction nor an ideological commitment of any kind. Individuals experiencing moratorium have begun to experiment with occupational and ideological choices, but have not yet made definite commitments. Individuals experiencing identity achievement have made conscious, clear-cut decisions about occupation and ideology.
