Discuss contingency theories of leadership
What will be an ideal response?
• Contingency theories of leadership differ from both trait and behavioral theories in emphasizing the situation or context. This theory posits that one must consider various situational variables in order to understand leadership in organizations.
• Fiedler's contingency model is constrained by three major situational dimensions. First, one must look at the level of trust between the leader and subordinates. Second, one must examine the task structure of the organization, that is "the degree to which the task is spelled out or must be left nebulous and undefined". Third, and finally, one needs to look at the leader's ability to exercise power within the organization, such as the ability to hire and fire.
• House and Mitchell espouse Path-Goal theory where the interaction between leader behavior and situational aspects of the organization are seen as key. The theory also argues that leadership is linked to an expectancy theory of motivation. Researchers have found Path-Goal theory to have valuable and practical implications for criminal justice agencies.
