Describe the similarities and differences between program goals and objectives
Program goals and objectives are the cornerstone of health promotion programs. The goals and objectives are based upon the identified priorities and determine every aspect of the program itself. While goals and objectives are related, they are not interchangeable. A goal is a broad statement of intention. It is a short and concise declarative statement that describes the expected effect of the health promotion program. A goal is not achieved during the course of the program and may take several years to reach.
Conversely, objectives are narrow and concrete steps directed toward achieving the goal. Objectives describe the incremental changes in the priority population as the program is implemented. An example of a program objective is, "By January 1, 2016, 50% of students at Hope University will be screened for depression." The objective must specify who will be affected and what will change. Additionally, objectives must be measurable in that they state how much or what kind of change will occur (i.e., increase, decrease) and also be realistic, or not beyond the scope of the program.
