What are the Tier 1: Distal background processes that contribute to addictive behavior?

What will be an ideal response?

Two beliefs that influence addictive behaviors are basic beliefs and addiction-related beliefs. In terms of basic beliefs, these represent fundamental and global beliefs that are accepted as truths. Three maladaptive core beliefs, which increase the vulnerability to psychological problems, fall into three broad categories including adequacy, lovability, and worthlessness. Basic beliefs are shaped by numerous background factors. Addiction-related beliefs influence one’s vulnerability to engaging in addictive behaviors. Two common beliefs are anticipatory beliefs, which reflect expectations of receiving positive reinforcement by engaging in the behavior, and relief-oriented beliefs, which represent beliefs that addictive behaviors will result in negative reinforcement. Both types of beliefs can be activated by triggers that cue the addictive behavior.
