Compare and contrast hearing loss that involves the tympanic membrane and the ossicles.
What will be an ideal response?
A torn tympanic membrane and damage to the ossicles are both forms of conductive hearing loss. The tympanic membrane can be ruptured for various reasons. However, this membrane may heal properly on its own, thus restoring full hearing. On the other hand, damage to the ossicles is more permanent. The ossicles can get a type of bone disease called otosclerosis, which involves the calcification of these bones. In this case, hearing can be improved by replacing the stapes with an artificial bone.
