What treatments are currently available for persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)?
What will be an ideal response?
There is no cure for AIDS yet. However, some treatments are available to control the disease. One of the first of the effective antiviral drugs is AZT (azidothymidine, also called ziduvine or ADV) and it has been used widely. It can stop the virus from multiplying, but it cannot repair the person's damaged immune system. Other examples of effective antiretroviral drugs are DDI and D4T. Another class of effective drugs is protease inhibitors. Darunavir is another, which acts on viruses that are resistant to the protease inhibitors. Today, patients take a "drug cocktail" of a combination of these drugs, called ART for antiretroviral treatment.
