Answer: 1. Running records can be completed in small groups or with individual students. They are used when a teacher wants to find out what materials the students can read. This type of assessment is particularly helpful at the beginning of the school year. 2. Informal reading inventories can help identify students' instructional reading levels. They are comprised of graded word lists and reading passages that progress from lower to higher grade levels. Three reading levels can be obtained: independent reading level, instructional reading level, and frustration reading level. The results of administering the graded word lists help determine how strong a student's sight vocabulary is and what word attack skills the student possesses. Oral reading of passages indicates how fluently a student reads and how context is used to figure out unfamiliar words. Silent reading comprehension can be compared with oral reading comprehension. Though IRIs are time-consuming, they provide detailed information about students' reading behaviors when reading. 3. Read and retell is another way to informally assess reading comprehension with students. To prepare for read and retells, either the classroom teacher or the students select a story to read. Once the teacher knows the story, the teacher creates a storytelling outline that includes story elements: characters, setting, problem, plot, solution, and ending.
