How do male friendships differ from female friendships?

What will be an ideal response?

As children mature, their peer groups shift in gender preference. As the shifts in gender preference occur, discrepancies between males and females emerge:
- Females attach more emotional importance to their friends than do males (Lempers & Lempers, 1993 ).
- Females emphasize a stronger mutual understanding, security, and mutual exploration of interests than do males (Kuttler, LaGreca, & Prinstein (1999 ).
- More so than males, females discuss family problems and activities, personal dreams, fears, personal problems, and secrets (Johnson & Airies, 1983 ).
- Males emphasize activity and achievement in their group friendships; they show less interest in reciprocity/mutuality, and support/caring than girls do (Thorne, 1986 ).
- Males discuss sports and hobbies more so than females (Johnson & Aires, 1983 ).
Researchers believe that the differences found between males' and females' friendship experiences are due to socialization patterns (Johnson & Aires, 1983; Kuttler LaGreca, & Prinstein, 1999). Male socialization tends to emphasize the establishment and maintenance of achievement, while female socialization tends to emphasize the importance of the establishment and maintenance of interpersonal relationships.
