Briefly describe Gorski’s CENAPS model of relapse prevention. List the key components of the model.

What will be an ideal response?

This model is based on CBT and the biopsychosocial perspective. This structured protocol helps to prevent relapse in the early, middle, and late stages of recovery. It is believed that the client is the expert on their own warning signs that signal impending relapse and together with the counselor, they can identify thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that precipitate a relapse and come up with a plan to prevent it.

Key components include:

1. Conduct a thorough assessment of client’s addiction and relapse history

2. Identify client’s individualized relapse warning signs

3. Develop coping strategies to manage each warning sign

4. Create structured recovery program based on development model of recovery

5. Construct an early intervention plan for relapse
