Why is a person with type O blood a universal donor? Consider the antibodies in the plasma of a type O person in your discussion.
What will be an ideal response?
A person with type O blood is a universal donor because there are no antigensĀ on the surface of their red blood cells. The recipient of the blood will not recognize the blood as a foreign substance, in regard to the ABO system. When blood is given to a patient, packed cells are normally given, not whole blood. Whole blood includes the plasma which contains the anti - A and anti - B antibodies. By removing the plasma and giving packed cells only, the patient receives cells with no AB antigens and no antibodies.
