A person is diagnosed with dysphagia when the transit of the bolus is impaired or inefficient. Another symptom would include slowed movement of food or liquid through the oral cavity or the pharynx. Residue, laryngeal penetration, and aspiration pneumonia may occur if the person is diagnosed with dysphagia. Residue refers to the remaining food or liquid present in the mouth or throat. Laryngeal penetration occurs when the patient attempts to swallow but the bolus enters the laryngeal area above the vocal folds. Aspiration pneumonia occurs when food or liquid enters the bronchi of the lungs, resulting in an infection.
