Why do nuclear reactions in a star occur only near its center?

High-speed collisions between atoms and subatomic particles are necessary to overcome the Coulomb barrier, and this means high temperature. The gas density must also be high so the number of collisions per second is large. Only near a star's center are these conditions right for nuclear reactions to occur.
