Describe how gender and ethnic minority status affect the development and selection of career or achievement roles.
What will be an ideal response?
Because many females have been socialized to adopt nurturing roles rather than career or achieving roles, they traditionally have not planned seriously for careers, have not explored career options extensively, and have restricted their career choices to careers that are gender-stereotyped. Although the motivation for work is the same for both sexes, females and males make different choices because of their socialization experiences and the ways that social forces structure the opportunities available to them. More than men, women are faced with questions involving how to balance a career and a family.
Too often the achievement of ethnic minority students-especially African American, Latino, and Native American students-has been interpreted as deficits by middle-socioeconomic-status non-Latino White standards, when these students simply are culturally different and distinct. Many studies have found that socioeconomic status predicts achievement better than ethnicity does.
