Discuss the pros and cons of genetic testing for cancer
What will be an ideal response?
• Benefits include identifying individuals at high risk so that they can receive more intense screening
and prevention; identifying individuals who are not at high risk so that intense surveillance or
surgical interventions can be avoided; and determining risk of family members.
• Whether the results are positive of negative, potential risks include psychological reactions,
such as fear, guilt, anger, and depression. Misinterpretation of negative test results might cause
individuals to postpone or not undergo suggested screenings. Workplace discrimination might
occur. Families might be disrupted because not all family members might want to know results;
results also might raise questions about biologic relationships. In some cases, individuals might
defer childbearing based on the results. These occurrences can be especially troubling because
positive results can only indicate a probability, not a certainty.
