The mRNA that is initially transcribed contains regions that are not part of the protein that will be translated. These noncoding regions of mRNA (introns) are removed from the mRNA by splicing. The mRNA then only contains the coding sequences (exons) that can be released from the nucleus to be translated by the ribosome. Due to alternative
splicing, the structure of the protein can be different which leads to isoforms of a protein.
